GAME
VIEWING
The Langano area is rich in wildlife. Located
in the Rift Valley region, this area is
rich in bird life as well as animals. Game
seen here include Grant’s gazelle,
greater kudu, oribi, warthog, Golden jackal,
etc.
BIRD WATCHING
Lake Langano and the surrounding Shalla,
Abyata and Awasa Rift Valley lakes are a
birding paradise. They are home to many
bird species including a large number of
white pelicans, pink flamingos, white-necked
cormorants, herons, storks, fish eagles,
spoonbills, ibises, ducks, gulls, terns,
other common water birds, the rare ground
horn bill, etc.
SWIMMING and SUNBATHING
The area provides a heavenly atmosphere
for honeymooners and vacationers.
FISHING
Fishing is popular at the Rift Valley lakes
with an ample supply of tilapia and catfish.
HOT SPRINGS
Revered locally for their medicinal properties,
the hot springs have a sense of primeval
mystery about them. They are relics of the
massive volcanic activity that formed the
amazing landscape in the area.
The local Oromo people bathe here and use
the hottest springs to boil their corn for
eating. This is a site not to be missed
as the nature and operation of these hot
springs on the shores of Lake Shalla are
fascinating.
MOUNTAIN BIKING
and HORSE RIDING
You will enjoy exhilarating mountain biking
as well as great horse riding. The trails
seem endless and offer a variety of plant
life and trees along the way.
OTHER ATTRACTIONS
Senkello Swayne’s hartebeest sanctuary
is located 70km from the town of Shashamene,
and is close to the Chitu entrance of Abyata-Shalla
National Park. Although it is small, it
is well worth a visit as it is one of only
four places where these endemic animals
have been confined. Other animals including
bohor reedbuck and warthogs are also found
here.
The Bale Mountains National Park is also
nearby.
